I was looking for a case that could hold my small Blackmagic 4K camera rig. At less than 13 lbs, the Pro Roller x200 AW case from Lowepro turned out to be the perfect case.
I needed my case to be able to do several key things. First, it needed to be able to travel as carry-on luggage to avoid extra baggage charges and the apes that pass for baggage handlers. The Pro Roller x200 AW case not only qualifies for carry-on, but the inside of the case can separate from the exterior shell to become a removable back pack. This is really handy when you need to check luggage on a small plane so that you can keep the important stuff with you in the backpack.
You can also leave the Pro Roller Case in your hotel room, and wear the backpack while shooting. This allows you to keep your hands free to shoot, while still giving you access to your lenses or other gear.
The next thing that was essential to me was the ability to easily re-configure the case when I swap out gear. The case comes with all of the removable walls that you could ask for, so it was actually fun to configure.
I like to keep the BMC 4K camera attached to the Alphatron EVF to save setup time. It was easy to reconfigure the inside of the case using the removable partitions to make room for my BMD 4K camera with the Alphatron EVF attached, with room left over for a set of Rokinon Cine Prime lenses, two chargers and Blueshape batteries, two OWC Mercury Extreme SSD drives, the Tiffen variable ND filter, and a pair of Sennheiser RF mics. I attached the Manfrotto M500 monopod to the external straps designed to secure it tightly to the side of the case.
Even a carry-on is not immune to pilfering, so there is a TSA lock that keeps people out of your camera bag while you are sleeping or away from your seat while traveling.
The case itself is water resistant, but in a downpour you just unzip the rain hood compartment on the back of the case and pull out the plastic cover. It’s a quick and easy way to add another layer of protection against the elements. The only downside is that I had to remove my Monopod from the side of the case since the rain hood is a really tight fit.
Inside the case there is a pair of nice removable bags, and four reinforced see-through pockets to keep you organized. On the front exterior is a large pocket, and a zip open pocket which is laid out for notebooks, pens, and all of the small stuff you need to get your job done.
The Pro Roller x200 AW case from Lowepro is a great case for DSLR shooters, and the BMD DSLR style cameras as well. At about $400, it’s a bit on the pricey side, but you do get the quality that you pay for, and it is a very well designed case.
